Next New

A new type of new media that I thought of is using virtual reality in order to help college students decide what they want to major in. By using virtual reality, students will be able to experience what it is like to have a career in different fields. This might help them make up their mind because sitting in lecture classes in college is nothing like the real world. It will be much more informative than watching a video because the students will be the person who is going through the daily functions.

  1. You do bring up a very good point; sitting in lectures shows us NOTHING about the real world. Simple videos don't do much for us either. Even when in internships, these aren't true representations of what we have to face when we get begin our careers, so the actual "hands on" (sort of) experience from VR would give us a much better picture. Of course, there are many career paths an individual can have after obtaining their degree, so there would have to be a wide array of VR previews. Very nice idea, I wish Baruch would have came up with something like this.

  2. You are 100% correct that students going to class doesn't say or show anything about how it actually is in the real corporate world. People need to be able to experience how it would actually be like working with the career they choose and they should be able to do that before graduation so they can change if they don't seem to like what they might be doing in the future. Internships can help, but they really limit your scope as you can do one internship at a time which are up to 8-10 weeks which doesn't allow you to experience other internships. I think your idea will allow people to experience many career paths and be able to see the day of a worker in the corporate world much more easily and efficiently.

  3. Seriously. I wish colleges focused on this more because it could save us students time and money because we don't know what we are getting into sometimes. Thats when students change their majors which waste money because you take some classes you don't need for the new major and time which is more valuable than money because you will never get that time back.
